IEEE Information Theory Society limits the size of correspondences
WSIL News & Views January 31st. 2007, 6:59pmIn a recent decision IEEE Information Theory Society has decided to limit the size of correspondence publications in the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory to five pages. I really dont see a merit in this decision, this makes correspondences equivalent to conference publications. A better idea would have been to do away with correspondences altogether and increase the acceptance rate in ISIT.

I agree…that way more professors get to vacation in exotic locations all on research dollars!
Is there really any merit to any IT publication? :P

Bob - last I checked students often vacation in exotic locations as well.
Rahul - I think the reason (at least I hope) is to force IT to accept more papers as regular papers. I think there is a lot of value to many correspondences but they are viewed as second class citizens because the end up on the back page. It seems political to me. Hopefully the net result will be a higher regular paper acceptance rate.

Bob: Well accept it or not IT is the best journal in the business related to our area.
Robert: I would be glad to see if thats gonna happen.

Rahul, unfortunately IT only caters to certain kinds of results. It may be the best place for a paper on space-time coding but probably not for a paper on channel estimation or synchronization. It really depends on the topic. I don’t think the review process is much different, besides being a lot slower.

Robert,
I agree that the Trans IT is very specific, but the point is that the percentage of “good” papers is much higher in IT than any other journal.

I don’t agree. The percentage of IT papers is much higher than other journals. That’s about all you can say. I don’t think the quality is higher and I don’t think the acceptance rate is lower than other journals.
